Jet Force Gemini is Rare's sixth game for the Nintendo 64 and is considered one of the most challenging and engaging titles available for the console. This third-person shooter follows three members of the Jet Force Gemini team. This group explores the galaxy, rescues groups of Tribals, and attempts to stop the tyrant Mizar. The game incorporates elements from platformers and action-adventure games in equal parts. With an original release date in 1999, many critics and gamers have considered this Rare's best title for the Nintendo 64 console over the years. It combines everything the company learned from the previous five games into one must-own title.At its core, Jet Force Gemini focuses its gameplay on exploring, platforming, and collecting items. Each interconnected level in this game features a wealth of objects to collect and secrets to find. Your characters have a number of skills that will help them reach faraway platforms. For example, your characters can hang on ledges and use a jet pack to navigate the sky. For those times when a mission takes you underwater, all three characters can swim as well. Players are given absolute control over their jumping, letting them adjust their arc while in midair. You'll need this level of control as some jumps in Jet Force Gemini require pixel-perfect accuracy.When you encounter a group of evil drones, it's time for combat to begin. Players will use a variety of weapons to blast their opponents into scrap metal. In a unique twist, weapons have no ammo cartridges, letting you fire your guns freely until you destroy your opponent. Rare added two ways to target your enemy using manual and automatic systems. In the automatic system, the game will aim for you. However, at those times when you need pinpoint accuracy, you can switch to the manual system. With this system, a gun scope reticle appears on the screen, letting you target an enemy's weak spots directly. Similar to other Rare games on the N64, progress in Jet Force Gemini is only made via discovering items. An array of locked doors blocks your progress, only becoming accessible when a particular number of Tribals or a specified item is found. You'll need to play as all three characters to complete a level at 100 percent. You don't need to find every item to finish this title and defeat the last boss. However, players who want a great ending will strive for this goal.When you want to take a break from the single-player story, Rare has added a few multiplayer modes to this N64 title. Players can battle each other in virtual arenas or race around a track. This Nintendo title supports two to four players simultaneously for each multiplayer mode.Jet Force Gemini has a rating of T for Teen for animated violence.
